It started with bread. It became about Abel.

It began with a simple love for bread — baking fresh treats to share with coworkers. Over time, that hobby grew into a true passion. And when our son Abel was born, that passion found its purpose.

People with Down syndrome are among the kindest and most compassionate people you’ll ever meet, yet they’re too often overlooked in the workplace. Through the classic craft of hand-rolled bagels, we want to highlight the charm, value, and talents of individuals with disabilities — one dozen at a time.

Why it matters

A 2024 study found only around 42% of people with Down syndrome in the U.S. are employed in any capacity — and many existing jobs fall under controversial FLSA 14© provisions that allow sub-minimum wages. Looking ahead to Abel’s future, we want to build a business that gives him fulfilling employment while sharing his sincere compassion with others.

Four ingredients. No shortcuts.

Flour, salt, malt, and yeast. No dough conditioners, no preservatives. Every bagel is mixed and hand-rolled, cold-proofed overnight for flavor and chew, then boiled and baked fresh — a dozen at a time.

Where we’re headed

Today, Abel’s Bagels operates from our home kitchen near Southlands Mall in Aurora, Colorado. Our long-term vision is a physical bakery that employs people with Down syndrome and other disabilities — a place for incredible bagels, and a common space where people from every walk of life find community and cause.
