Who We Are
It began with a simple love for bread - bringing in fresh-baked treats to share with coworkers. Over time, that hobby grew into a true passion. And when my son Abel was born, that passion found its purpose.
People with Down Syndrome are among the kindest and most compassionate you’ll ever meet, yet they are too often overlooked in the workplace. At Abel’s Bagels, we believe in great food, meaningful work, and building a community where everyone’s talents shine. Through the classic craft of hand-rolled bagels, we aim to highlight the charm, value, and talents of individuals with disabilities.
Our Process
Our bagels are made the old-fashioned way - by hand. Using only a few simple ingredients: flour, salt, malt, and yeast. You won’t find any dough conditioners or preservatives here. Each batch is cold-proofed overnight for the perfect flavor and texture, then boiled and baked fresh, a dozen at a time.
Inspired by Family
Made for Everyone
While many parents have to plan for the future of their children, having a child with disabilities can often make you plan on a longer scale. A 2024 study found in the United States around 42% of people with Down Syndrome are employed in any capacity today, with many of their opportunities being part time, or employment under controversial provisions in the Fair Labor Standards Act (14c). Looking forward to Abel’s future, I want to create a business that will provide him with fulfilling employment while allowing him to share his sincere compassion with others. This is the heart behind Abel’s Bagels.
Today, Abel’s Bagels operates as a home business, and we are located near Southlands Mall in Aurora, Colorado. Our long term vision is to open a physical location that will provide employment opportunities for individuals with Down Syndrome and other disabilities. We aim to provide our community with incredible bagels while also providing a common space for people from all walks of life to find community and cause.
